Palmer invite for SE fair exhibit winners

Exhibit entries at the Southeast Alaska State Fair this year will get to compete against the best exhibits in the state, under an arrangement offered by the Alaska State Fair in Palmer.

Under the arrangement, division winners and department champions in the fair here will be sent on to Palmer to compete in the same categories there. Shipping expenses will be covered by the larger fair.

“They want to make us a feeder system,” said fair assistant director Jessica Edwards.

Participation at Palmer is elective. “We won’t send the exhibits of people who don’t want to be separated from their entries,” Edwards said.

Officials with the Palmer fair recently traveled throughout Southeast, hoping to spur participation in their event from the state’s outlying areas. “The Alaska State Fair wants to include Southeast Alaska in their exhibit hall. They want entries from all over the state,” Edwards said.

Palmer fair exhibit officials are excited to see work from Haines, Edwards said. “They were surprised how many exhibits we get for such a small fair.”

Only non-perishable exhibits will be shipped to Palmer. “We’re not sending baked goods, flowers and plants,” Edwards said.

The Alaska State Fair in Palmer is set for Aug. 23-Sept. 3. For more information, contact the Southeast Alaska State Fair, 766-2476.

In other fair news, the 2012 fair exhibitor guide was distributed this week. The booklet lists departments, classes and lots for fair entries, with separate categories ranging from delphiniums to bearbread painting.

It also includes a list of rules and regulations for exhibitors and entry deadlines.
