More downtown construction is scheduled to begin next week, as part of a project that includes improvements to Third and Fourth avenues, Lynnview Drive and View Street.
The Haines Borough Assembly on May 8 approved a contract up to $1,358,226 for Southeast Roadbuilders to complete the work.
Funding for the final grading, drainage and paving improvements comes from a $4.5 million legislative grant awarded in fiscal year 2012 for road rehabilitation and maintenance.
Roger Schnabel, Southeast Roadbuilders president, said the project covers Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue between Union and View streets; Lynnview Drive from View up to Young Road; and View from Second Avenue to Fourth Avenue.
“It will end up with pavement and a rolled curb,” Schnabel said. “It’s all storm drain underground, and it will all be paved in the end.”
The work is due to be completed by mid-September, he said.
“Because of the excavation, there will be times where the roads will actually be closed,” Schnabel said.
