Track was heart-moving trail of lives

The recipe for a luminary lantern is simple: a white paper bag with a light inside and the names of our deceased loved ones written thereon. Placed around the high school track, the names became a heart-moving trail of lives departed but not forgotten. There is such history in a name!

Inspired by the meaning of Hospice of Haines’ new event, Light the Night, we brought the damp bags home, dried them overnight and folded them carefully, respectfully.

Thank you, Tim and Ann McDonough, Nancy Schnabel, Joanie Wagner, Maribeth Walter, the McPhetres family, Heather Lende and the Weerasinghe family. Thank you, Gregg Bigsby, for the wonderful sound system, to Haines High for the venue, to the Sheldon Museum and Mardell Gunn for the tent and torches.

To all who came by and shared our vision for an annual event, thank you for braving the weather and your generous donations that will help hospice volunteers continue to serve in our community.
