Police chief Gary Lowe will facilitate a town hall meeting 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31, at the Chilkat Center to address alcohol abuse and misuse in Haines.
In the past two months in Haines, a 21-year-old died in a one-vehicle accident that involved alcohol and an 18-year-old was run over during an underage drinking party.
"The police can’t solve the problem," Lowe said. "All the police can do is enforcement, and enforcement is one means of working on it, but it’s not a solution; it’s a reactive way of looking at it. We want to take a proactive stance, and you need the entire community involved in that."
He said the round-table discussion at the town hall meeting will be part of an ongoing effort to combat the issue.
"There is no way that one snapshot is going to solve the problem," Lowe said. "It’s going to have to be identifying some long-term solutions. We’re not going to solve anything in this meeting; we’re just going to identify areas that we can possibly look at for a solution.
"We’re going to need some short-term goals and some long-term goals to really change the way people think around here."
