Memorial services for former resident Jeremy Stearns will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24 at the Salvation Army Church in Palmer. Stearns, 27, of Big Lake, died Aug. 8 of cancer at the Mat-Su Regional Medical Center in Palmer.
Jeremy Eugene Stearns was born July 30, 1984 in Modesto, Calif. He moved to Alaska in 1989 and lived in Haines from 1991 until 2001 before moving to Wasilla where he finished high school in 2003. He was a member of the Salvation Army Church, a collector of Hot Wheels and Legos, and loved God, his dog, to swim, and to play video games, his family said.
Stephanie Scott was his teacher at Haines High."Jeremy was incredibly kind. He was a helper and had some kind of inner guidance system that told him what was needed before words were exchanged. When I heard the news of his death, the words gentle and kind sprung to mind without any consideration at all."
Stearns was preceded in death by his grandfather, James Earl Stearns; great-grandmother, Bertha "Granny" Jennings; and brother in law, Jason Poole. He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Evelyn Stearns and John Edwards of Big Lake; sister Amanda Alvarado of Sumter, S.C.; sister Shaila Poole of Big Lake; grandmother Floy Manning of Haines; and grandparents Bridgette and "Grizz" Berg of Aniwa, Wis.
Contributions or cards may be sent to the family at P.O. Box 520545, Big Lake, AK 99652.
