The Haines Visitor’s Center will present a "Night for Tourism" on Wednesday, May 11, at the American Bald Eagle Foundation.
"The focus is really community - not only the tourism community but the Haines community as a whole - and trying to get a little bit more focus on what tourism is for the community," said Tanya Carlson, tourism director.
The networking event is scheduled for 6-9 p.m., with one-minute presentations from local businesses and guest appearances by Todd Hoffman and Dakota Fred of "Gold Rush: Alaska," the Discovery Channel reality TV series filmed in the Haines Borough.
"It’s just to let everybody know a little bit more about what’s out there for visitors," Carlson said. "As I’ve come here, I’ve found more and more people who aren’t sure of everything there is to do or think that some of the tours are only for cruise ship passengers, and that’s not always the case."
Beer and wine will be sold, and finger food will be served.
Carlson started as tourism director in March, around the time "Gold Rush: Alaska" wrapped up its first season of gold mining episodes at a Porcupine claim. She said the "Night for Tourism" might attract other cast members, as well.
"I just called them and told them about the event, what we were trying to do and what we wanted to focus on," Carlson said. "That show is really something to put Haines on the map."
