Joel resigns police post
Officer Jason Joel resigned from the Haines Borough Police Department effective April 4.
Joel served in the department five years and said this week he’s seeking seasonal employment on the North Slope.
Joel had been a police sergeant, but his rank shifted to patrolman at the beginning of February, a change police chief Gary Lowe said Joel sought for personal reasons. Joel and Lowe this week declined to discuss details about Joel’s departure.
In a February memo to assembly members, Lowe described Joel as “a very valuable member of this department.”
Lowe at that time said he would operate without a sergeant, and officer Cassandra McEwen would take on some of the responsibilities of the supervisory sergeant position.
“We’ll be looking to hire to fill that position,” Lowe said this week. “We have some options right now. We have some people currently on staff who are capable of filling that role.”
