Shop local effort set

February 3, 2011

A subcommittee of the Haines Downtown Revitalization Committee and the Haines Chamber of Commerce began planning this week for an April promotion aimed at encouraging residents to shop locally.

Ideas include a series of radio and newspaper advertisements, buttons and posters intended to get people thinking of local retailers. A tentative name for the campaign is, "Think Local First."

"We understand that shopping at home may not work every time for everything you need, but to at least try," said Haines Chamber of Commerce president Ned Rozbicki. Stores in town offer more items than many people are aware of, he said.

With the downturn in the national economy and possible reductions in state spending, it’s important the community get together on the issue, he said.

Bookstore owner Liz Heywood said shopping locally is critical for many reasons, including maintaining sales tax revenues that help run the town. "If you’re not shopping here, you’re not putting into that pot."

The revitalization committee next meets 5:30 p.m. Feb. 17 at the Rusty Compass coffee shop on Main Street. Call the Chamber at 766-2202 for more information.
