The banner project of the Haines Centennial Committee is a slam dunk. These colorful flags brighten and help define our downtown core while keeping our rustic character intact. They are exactly what downtown planners meant by "unifying features" that help direct visitors to our commercial district.

For the remainder of the summer, cruise passengers can get downtown simply by following the red banners. Great job.

Stories in this week’s paper touch on boom times in Haines around 1910 and 1970. Less pronounced but more recent booms came from oil wealth in the early 1980s and from cruise ship tourism and real estate in the late 1990s.

Our town rides the crests and swells of outside economic forces we can’t always control. A measure of our achievement as a community is how well we manage those elements of our economy over which we have a say – like investing in our town by shopping at home.
