Beer festival to feature 15 breweries

May 20, 2010

The gourmet beer dinner at the 18th annual Great Alaska Craft Beer and Home Brew Festival already is sold out.

"We have more inquiries from out of town. We’re going to have the biggest festival ever this year," said Haines Brewing Co. president Paul Wheeler.

One hundred and eighty diners will pay $60 per plate for the five-course meal May 28 that features rich and spicy items including a Mexican seafood cocktail, cheesy Bavarian sausage and flank steak in a lime chipotle sauce.

Each course is served with complementary brews. The meal will be held in Harriett Hall.

For the first time, the beer festival will be capping a week of brew events in Juneau and Skagway dubbed, "Southeast Alaska Beer Week."

Wheeler is hoping that will boost the Haines event, too. "It gives more awareness of beers regionwide and in our area. It puts a focus on it."

Judging of home-brew entries will be held before dinner.

Fifteen breweries from Alaska and the Yukon Territory will be featured at the main event, a beer tasting 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 29 in Dalton City.

"We’ve got almost everyone here. It’s the first time we’ve had such enthusiasm from people coming," Wheeler said.

Admission is $28 and includes a commemorative beer glass.

Juneau’s Chill Kats and Bavarian Beer Hunters will provide the music for the event. Food vendors will offer pizza, brats, fish and chips, and tacos.
