Museum birthday party Sunday
Staff at the Sheldon Museum and Cultural Center invites residents to celebrate the museum’s 30th birthday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, with birthday cake and the unveiling of updated exhibits in the lower gallery.
Museum director Jerrie Clarke said the celebration is planned to coincide with International Museum Day, and is an opportunity to showcase the revamped lower gallery, still a work in progress.
For more information, contact the museum at 766-2366.
Clarke said work on the new exhibits will continue this year, and includes adding additional research from the museum’s archives and from community members to the exhibits.
Museum exhibits coordinator Karen Meizner said the museum is searching for artifacts to include in the revised exhibits on the history of Chilkat Valley fisheries, canneries, mining, timber, Fort Seward, and the Dalton trail.
"We’re hoping to collect artifacts that will help us tell these stories of Chilkat Valley history, such as photographs of people in the industries and the tools they used."
Also new to the lower gallery is an exhibit of work by Chilkat Valley artists.
