Village to unveil plans for
cultural heritage center

Klukwan will unveil the final building design of its planned $7 million Jilkaat Kwaan Cultural Heritage Center during a benefit auction and dinner starting 6 p.m. Nov. 7 at the village ANS Hall.

The project’s first phase, including construction of a cultural camp and extension of water, sewer, and electrical lines, was completed during the summer, said Lani Hotch, secretary of the non-profit overseeing the project.

The project’s second phase will include $600,000 riverbank stablization at the site and construction of $1.8 million restroom, shower and kitchen facility that will serve both the cultural center and the camp. The final phase will be building the center, which will house artifacts, including items recently repatriated.

Hotch said building plans to be unveiled will include all architectural and engineering details for construction. "It will be everything we need to plan and build it, except for the money."

The dinner will feature a dance performance and an auction of Native food baskets, Native art, and gourmet desserts. Public tours of the cultural camp will be offered during the week.

Tickets are available at the Haines Visitor’s Center, Babbling Book and the Klukwan village office.
